TPLO Surgery

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy

What Is TPLO Surgery?

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is an advanced orthopedic procedure used to treat cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs. Instead of replacing the torn ligament, TPLO stabilizes the knee by altering the biomechanics of the joint, allowing the leg to function without reliance on the damaged ligament.

TPLO is considered one of the gold standards for medium to large breed dogs, active patients, and dogs with significant instability.

When Is TPLO Recommended?

TPLO may be recommended for dogs with:
  • Complete or partial cranial cruciate ligament rupture
  • Persistent hind limb lameness
  • Active lifestyles or athletic demands
  • Failed conservative management
Every patient undergoes a comprehensive, individualized assessment to ensure the most suitable surgical approach.

The TPLO Procedure

A curved incision is made during surgery, allowing precise rotation of the tibial plateau. The bone is stabilized with plate and screw fixation. With proper aftercare, most patients can return to an active lifestyle.
Recovery & Expected Outcomes
  • Gradual improvement in weight-bearing over several weeks
  • Strict activity restriction during bone healing
  • Excellent long-term outcomes when combined with appropriate aftercare and rehabilitation
